VIDEO

This video package brings to the attention of seafarers the truth about AIDS and dispels some of the misconceptions about the disease. The programme follows the progress of three seafarers, one of whom is destined to contract the disease, out for a night's shore leave. This easily watchable film also imparts a great deal of information such as:

  • You don't have to be homosexual to catch AIDS.
  • AIDS can be caught by intravenous drug users sharing needles and by being given contaminated blood products.
  • The HIV virus, which causes AIDS, cannot be transmitted in food or drink, or through the air by coughing or sneezing; it cannot be caught by shaking hands or using the same toilet facilities as an infected person.
  • No-one has ever caught HIV from cooking or eating utensils.
  • The commonest way of catching HIV is through sexual intercourse. The more sexual partners, especially prostitutes you have the greater the risk.
  • If you become infected with HIV and you are in a relationship, you may infect your partner or unborn child.
  • The safest thing is to always to use a condom.
